SINGAPORE (Sept 14): EY, the professional services organisation, has announced five winners for the 16th Entrepreneur of the Year (EOY) 2017 Singapore awards who embodied the theme “Leading through disruption”.
Max Loh, EY Asean and Singapore Managing Partner, Ernst & Young LLP says, “Yoong Hui and Teck Chong pioneered the application of analytics to the maritime industry. Through their suite of solutions, they are helping the maritime industry make better decisions in increasing fuel savings and optimising vessel performance.”
Under the financial services technology enablement category, Lennon Tan, group chairman of JK Tech Group won the award.
Chia Yoong Hui, founder, chairman and CEO of Ascenz won under the maritime technology solutions category.
“When faced with disruptions in his industry, Lennon demonstrated fortitude and foresight in seizing opportunities to shift his business from a distributorship to a manufacturer of technological solutions,” says Loh.
As for the advanced manufacturing category, Shi Xu, CEO of Nanofilm Technologies International emerged as the winner.
According to Loh, Shi Xu despite having no business experience has identified the commercial values of the group’s patented Filtered Cathodic Vacuum Arc (FCVA) technology that represents a significant advancement in thin film deposition, and is now used for a wide variety of industrial applications in the marketplace.
The fourth category, diversified engineering, saw Derrick Yap, CEO of PBA International take home the award.
Through strategic acquisitions and R&D investments in emerging technologies, Yap evolved his family’s trading business. Loh says that although there were risks and costs in being an early adopter of technology, this helped give the business a head start in the industry 4.0 manufacturing race.
Meanwhile, Tolaram Group was awarded the EY-Standard Charted Family Business Award of Excellence.
Judy Hsu, CEO of Standard Charted Bank, Singapore says, “This year’s award winner, Tolaram Group, has grown from strength to strength over the past 60 years, built a distinct brand and conquered new terrain while staying true to its deeply entrenched values and culture.”
